FAQ

How long has CASW been working with youth?

Over 40 years! Founded in 1968 and incorporated in 1972, CASW is the neighborhood's most experienced youth serving organization.

Is there a fee for your programs?

The Cultural Workshops Program, the After School Program at PS 178 and the programs at PS 173 charge fees. All the rest of our programs are free to youth and families who meet eligibility requirements. See Our Programs for specific program information.

I do not live in Washington Heights or Inwood. Can I still participate in your programs?

Yes. Our program sites are located on the Upper West Side, in Washington Heights, Inwood and in the Bronx, but youth from all over the city are welcome to participate.

What is the age range of your programs?

We have programs for youth, ages 4 to 21. See "Programs" for specific program age ranges.

Who works at CASW?

Program alumni comprise 65% of our staff including the Executive Director, who joined CASW 24 years ago as a Group Leader in the After School Center. Our Program Directors are all college graduates who have at least five years of management experience. All CASW staff members who work directly with youth are fingerprinted per NYS Department of Health regulations, and cleared through the New York State Child abuse registry.

Are there programs for Spanish speakers?

All of our programs are conducted in English, but 98% of our staff is bilingual (English/Spanish) and can easily accommodate Spanish-speaking children. For a Spanish version of this site, click the 'en Espaņol' link near the top of the page.

What does it mean to be a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization? Can I donate to CASW?

Having 501(c)3 status means that all of the funding we receive goes into our programming for youth. We welcome individual contributions, which are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
